Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back

DUBLIN: 28 September - 29 September 2023

On Thursday, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle travelled to Ireland to attend the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament, organised by the Council of Europe in Dublin. On the first day of the conference, the Speaker spoke on the UK support for Ukraine alongside Chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, Dr Ruslan Stefanchuk.

In the afternoon, the Speaker met with the President of the Austrian National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka. The Speaker also met the Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Kenneth Forslund.

On Friday, the Speaker met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr Tiny Kox, and attended day two of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament.

During the week, no business took place in the Chamber as it was conference recess.

Attending the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament

The Speaker attended day one of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament and spoke on UK support for Ukraine and the role of national Parliaments in reconstruction. Chairman of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, Dr Ruslan Stefanchuk, was onstage alongside the Speaker.

Bilateral meetings

The Speaker met with the President of the Austrian National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, during the first day of the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Dublin. During their bilateral meeting they discussed cooperation between the House of Commons and the Austrian Parliament and security in Europe.

The Speaker also met with the Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Kenneth Forslund. During their bilateral meeting they discussed global political stability and forging stronger connections between the British and Swedish Parliaments.

The Speaker met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Tiny Kox, to thank him for a valuable and productive European Conference of Presidents of Parliament.
