Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back at the past week

During the week Statements and Urgent Questions relating to the current situation in Ukraine took place in the Commons Chamber, including a Statement from the Prime Minister on Thursday evening following a meeting of G7 leaders joined by Secretary-General Stoltenberg of NATO.
On Monday, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, welcomed to Parliament a Congressional delegation led by US Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
Both Speakers vowed to continue their discussions to counter antidemocratic forces in legislatures around the world. The Speakers and a Congressional delegation also discussed the ongoing threat of Russian aggression against Ukraine and Western efforts to push for diplomacy.
On Tuesday, the Speaker welcomed Uruguay’s Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency, Dr Cesar Rodriguez-Zavalla.
On Wednesday, the Speaker welcomed a delegation of Jamaican MPs as part of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK. Mr Speaker highlighted the importance of the Commonwealth family and the strength of its relationships.
The Speaker also welcomed Finland’s Ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Mr Jukka Siukosaari.
On Wednesday, the Speaker also chaired Prime Minister's Questions, as well as further business in the Chamber, including three statements on Ukraine.
On Thursday, as well as chairing the debate on the Statement from the Prime Minister on Ukraine, Mr Speaker hosted a reception for the Diplomatic Corps in Speaker's House which provided an opportunity to discuss the current situation in Ukraine with the international community.
