Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back

11 September - 17 September

On Monday, the Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle read a statement to MPs on a House security matter, following this the Speaker chaired Chamber business including Questions to the Secretary of State for Defence.

On Tuesday, the Speaker visited the Westminster Foundation for Democracy Garden of Democracy exhibit in Portcullis House.

In the evening, the Speaker welcomed London United, an organisation made up of 16 London based Professional Football Club Community Organisations (CCOs), to Speaker’s House to celebrate 10 years of the clubs working together.

On Wednesday morning, the Speaker welcomed to the House of Commons, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Jordan, His Excellency Mr Ahmad Safadi. The Speaker was also visited by the President of the Uruguay House of Representatives, Sebastián Andújar MP, at Speaker’s House.

In the afternoon, the Speaker chaired Chamber business including Prime Minister's Questions.

On Thursday, the Speaker met with Beefeaters who visited Parliament a year on from supporting the Lying-in-State of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Hall.

11 September

Statement on a House security matter

The Speaker read a statement to MPs in the Chamber on a security matter. The Speaker provided reassurances that the House follows the same vetting procedures as the government, that the issues raised by media stories are being addressed and that the House administration is working closely and effectively with relevant authorities.

12 September

Westminster Foundation for Democracy Garden of Democracy exhibit

The Speaker visited Portcullis House to see the Westminster Foundation for Democracy Garden of Democracy exhibit. Each panel of the exhibition highlighted the building blocks required to strengthen democracy.

Hosting a reception for London United

The Speaker welcomed London United, an organisation made up of 16 London based Professional Football Club Community Organisations (CCOs), to Speaker’s House to celebrate 10 years of the 16 clubs working together with support from the Premier League to benefit the lives of their local communities.

13 September

Welcoming the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Jordan

The Speaker welcomed the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Jordan, His Excellency Mr Ahmad Safadi, to the House of Commons.  During their meeting they had the opportunity to discuss diplomacy between the House of Commons and the Jordanian Parliament and what can be done to strengthen it.

Welcoming the President of the Uruguay House of Representatives

The Speaker hosted the President of the Uruguay House of Representatives, Sebastián Andújar MP, in Speaker’s House. During their meeting they discussed the long and historic relationship between the UK and Uruguay and what more we can do to deepen the friendship.
