Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back

14 November - 20 November 2022

On Monday, the Speaker launched the start of UK Parliament Week in which all over the UK, schools and local communities took the opportunity to explore what UK Parliament means to them.

The Speaker also welcomed winners of the Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition to the state apartments.

On Tuesday, as well as chairing Chamber business, the Speaker had a virtual discussion with Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament.

The Speaker also hosted an event on 200 years of Brazilian independence and welcomed the Ambassadors from Brazil, Portugal, Uruguay and Argentina.

On Wednesday, the Speaker chaired Prime Minister's Questions, as well as further business in the Chamber including a Statement on the missile incident in Poland.

On Thursday, the Speaker chaired Chamber business including a Statement from the Prime Minister on G20 and the Autumn Statement from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Welcoming winners of The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Writing Competition

The Speaker was pleased to welcome to the state apartments, the winners of The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition - the world's oldest international schools' writing competition. There was a record-breaking 26,300 entries to this year’s competition. The competition is delivered by the Royal Commonwealth Society, chaired by Dr Linda Yueh.

Virtual discussion with Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament

In their discussion, the Speaker and the President of the European Parliament agreed that the response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an example of what the UK and the EU can achieve together when there is a focus on shared values of freedom and democracy.
