Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back
20 - 26 February 2023
On Monday, the Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, chaired Commons Chamber business including a statement on 'Security Threat to UK-based journalists'.
On Tuesday, the Speaker was honoured to host the the President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas at the House of Commons.
The Speaker also welcomed Sir David Attenborough to Parliament for the opening of a new exhibition of photos in Parliament featuring the first voyage to Antarctica of the polar research vessel, RRS Sir David Attenborough.
During the day, the Speaker opened the Loving Earth exhibition in Parliament featuring textiles created by people of all ages from across the UK on the subject of climate change.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Speaker chaired Prime Minister's Questions.
During the day he welcomed six year old Dáithà Mac Gabhann and his family to Speaker's House.
On Friday, the Speaker travelled to Belfast to meet with Speakers and Presiding Officers from across the UK.
Friday marked one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Parliament observed a minute's silence at 11am. To show Parliament’s support for the people of Ukraine the Palace of Westminster was illuminated blue and yellow - the colours of Ukraine's flag.

Welcoming the President of the Bundestag
The Speaker was honoured to welcome the President of the Bundestag to the House of Commons and to Speaker's House. The meeting provided a good opportunity to discuss the strong, long-standing relationship between the UK and Germany. The President also attended Prime Minister's Questions.
The Speaker opened polar exhibition in Parliament
The Speaker opened a new exhibition of photos in Parliament featuring the first voyage to Antarctica of the polar research vessel, RRS Sir David Attenborough.
The Polar Class 5 ice-strengthened ship has spent the last year in the Antarctic ice performing science trials to improve our understanding of climate change.
As a passionate advocate for the British Overseas Territories (OTs), the Speaker is particularly interested in the work of the team behind the RRS Sir David Attenborough because of its visits to the British Antarctic Territory - the UK’s largest overseas territory.
At the special event attended by the ship’s namesake, naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, the Speaker unveiled ‘First Ice’ - a series of 12 photos from the British Antarctic Survey, plus a ship’s model - in Portcullis House.
The Speaker opened the Loving Earth exhibition in Parliament
The Speaker was pleased to open the Loving Earth exhibition in Parliament, which he had first seen in St Laurence's Church in Chorley. The display features textiles created by people of all ages from across the UK urging others to change their behaviours to preserve the world we live in.

The Speaker welcomed six year old Dáithà Mac Gabhann
The Speaker welcomed six year old Dáithà Mac Gabhann and his family to Speaker's House. He and his family were in the public gallery of the Chamber as legislation was passed allowing an opt-out organ donation system to be implemented in Northern Ireland.
Meeting with Speakers and Presiding Officers from across the UK
The Speaker travelled to Stormont House in Belfast to exchange ideas and discuss common challenges facing our legislatures with Speakers and Presiding Officers from the UK.
Together they observed a minute's silence at 11am in support of the people of Ukraine on the day which marked one year since Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Whilst in Belfast the Speaker also met with Northern Ireland Youth Assembly members ahead of their fifth Plenary Sitting.
