Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back

17 April - 23 April 2023

On Monday, the Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle chaired Chamber business including urgent questions on NHS strikes and the trial of Vladimir Kara-Murza.

On Tuesday, as well as chairing Chamber business, the Speaker welcomed the Ambassador of Algeria, His Excellency Mr. Lounès Magramane for a meeting in Speaker's House.

On Wednesday morning, the Speaker welcomed the High Commissioner of Uganda, Nimisha Madhvani to the House of Commons.

Furthermore, the Speaker chaired Chamber business including Prime Minister's Questions.

Over the weekend the Speaker was invited to attend the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments (EUSC) which focussed on the subject of Russia's aggression towards Ukraine.

18 April

Welcoming the Ambassador of Algeria

The Speaker was pleased to welcome His Excellency Mr. Lounès Magramane, the Algerian Ambassador to the UK to the House of Commons. In the meeting they discussed the good relationship and co-operation that exists between our Algeria and the United Kingdom.

19 April

Welcoming the High Commissioner of Uganda

The Speaker welcomed the High Commissioner of Uganda, Nimisha Madhvani to the House of Commons. During the meeting they discussed bilateral and regional issues, such as trade and investment, the number of refugees Uganda hosts, and the subject of LGBT rights.

23 April

Attending the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments (EUSC)

The Speaker was invited to attend the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments (EUSC) in Prague. During the Conference, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine spoke about Russian aggression against Ukraine and the EU response in a broader geopolitical context.

The Speaker also had a meeting with the Lower House Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Marketa Pekarova Adamova. They discussed the importance of support for Ukraine from different parliaments.
