Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back

On Monday, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle chaired Chamber business including Ministerial Statements on Ukraine and the execution of Alireza Akbari in Iran.
On Tuesday morning the Speaker welcomed the Ambassador of Chile, Mrs Susana Herrera Quezada. In the evening the Speaker was proud to support the Gurkha Welfare Trust by welcoming the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas to perform a special Sounding Retreat ceremony in Speaker’s Court.
On Wednesday, the Speaker chaired Prime Minister's Questions, as well as further business in the Chamber including the remaining stages of the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill.
The Speaker was also glad to welcome to the Commons, the Ambassador for Lithuania, Mr Eitvydas Bajarūnas and the Premier for the British Virgin Islands, the Hon Dr. Natalio Wheatley.

Welcoming the Ambassador of Chile, Mrs Susana Herrera Quezada
The Speaker hailed 200 years of UK-Chile relations as he welcomed Chile’s newly-appointed Ambassador, Mrs Susana Herrera Quezada to Parliament.
The ambassador was also invited to view a 180-year-old parchment Act signed by Queen Victoria, which put into effect a Treaty between the UK and Chile to end slave trafficking.
Also on display from the Parliamentary Archives was a photograph of former Speaker Selwyn Lloyd from a meeting with a Chilean Parliamentary delegation in 1973.
Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas perform a special Sounding Retreat ceremony
The Speaker was proud to support the Gurkha Welfare Trust by welcoming the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas to perform a special Sounding Retreat ceremony in Speaker’s Court.
The Trust aims to secure help to build earthquake-resilient homes for Gurkha veterans in Nepal who have given so much to this country and their families.

Welcoming the Ambassador for Lithuania, Mr Eitvydas Bajarūnas
The Speaker was glad to welcome the Lithuanian Ambassador to the UK, Mr Eitvydas Bajarūnas to the House of Commons. The meeting provided a good opportunity to discuss the need to enhance Lithuania-UK parliamentary cooperation.
Welcoming the Premier for the British Virgin Islands, the Hon Dr. Natalio Wheatley
The Speaker welcomed Dr. Natalio Wheatley, the Premier for the British Virgin Islands to the House of Commons.
During the meeting the Premier presented the Speaker with a stamp design marking 20 years of the office of the British Virgin Islands in London.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Speaker to hear about recent developments in the British Virgin Islands, including the territory going through a constitutional review process, with elections constitutionally due by May 2023.
