Speaker of the House of Commons: A look back

11 - 17 July 2022

On Monday, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle presided over Chamber business, including an Urgent Question on Ministers’ Severance Pay.

The Speaker also attended a parliamentary reception to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the charity Rethink Mental Illness.

On Tuesday, the Speaker welcomed Her Excellency Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan.

In the evening the Speaker attended and spoke at a Remembering Srebrenica reception held in Speaker's House. The reception was attended by Bosnia’s President Šefik Džaferović and Ambassador Vanja Filipovic.

On Wednesday, the Speaker chaired Prime Minister's Questions and further business in the Chamber.

In the afternoon, the Speaker's appointment as President of the Rugby Football League was also announced by the Rugby Football League.

In the evening the Speaker attended a PinkNews Parliamentary Reception held in the Speaker's State Apartments, attended by colleagues across the estate.

On Thursday, the Speaker welcomed the Governor-Designate for the Falkland Islands, Alison Blake CMG - who will be the first female Governor of the Islands.

The Speaker also welcomed to the House of Commons, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, Ioannis Kasoulides.

Friday was a sitting Friday in the House of Commons Chamber. The House generally only sits on thirteen Fridays in a session to consider Private Members' Bills (PMBs), but can agree to sit on other Fridays when government business would take precedence.

During the week, the following business took place in the Chamber:

  • Urgent Questiom: Ambulance Services and National Heatwave Emergency
  • Urgent Question: Sri Lanka
  • Urgent Question: British Special Forces in Afghanistan: New Allegations

Remembering Srebrenica reception

The Speaker attended and spoke at a Remembering Srebrenica reception held in Speaker's House. This July marks 27 years since the genocide at Srebrenica and commemoration events are taking place across the UK to remember the victims and honour the survivors.

Speaker announced as President of the Rugby Football League

The Speaker said "It is an honour to be appointed President of the Rugby Football League, and I thank the Council for their support.

"I have loved the sport of Rugby League all my life, having been brought up on it by my father, and have always admired the qualities of the players, and the attitudes of the supporters – it is a real family sport."
